If you recently upgraded to newer Windows versions such as XP/Vista/7, you certainly need new printer driver for your printer to work. Drivers are applications that establish communication between Windows and the hardware (any hardware viz. printer, modem, router etc.).
If the driver is faulty or corrupted then replace it by downloading and installing a new, compatible one. Also, regularly update drivers for smooth functioning of printers. You can download and update drivers from your manufacturer's website or simply run Windows Update to check if new updates are available to download.

The printing text can appear too faded if the toner cartridge is nearing to finish, the EconoMode feature is on, or the print density is set on low mode. If first is the case, remove the toner cartridge and shake it well so that the toner is evenly redistributed. This will restore the proper printing temporarily until the cartridge is replaced.
To disable EconoMode, go to 'Control Panel'> select 'Printer & faxes'> right click on the HP printer icon and click on 'Properties' from the list. Click on the 'Printing Preferences' button and then click on the 'Finishing' button. Search through the window for print quality settings, and remove the checkmark from the 'EconoMode' box to deactivate the feature. Click on 'Apply' and then click on 'OK' to close the window.
To change print density settings, go to the same tab 'Printing Preferences' under 'Properties' in the 'Printer & faxes'.
